"This is a personal statement from Master Roy Terence Fiu:

➡️ OOCSA Volunteer: Mr. Roy Terence Fiu

Bula, my name is Roy Terence Fiu and I’m from the island of Rotuma. My occupation is a Primary School Teacher, and I’ve served in many parts of Fiji for the last 20 years. Being posted to Levuka in the maritime zone has challenged me to new heights in my career. Not only do I serve to foster education to the children of Levuka for the last 9 years, but I also engage in volunteering with organizations such as OOCSA.

I joined OOCSA in 2019 and have been a volunteer to date.

My vision for volunteering with OOCSA stems from a deep desire to contribute to preserving and promoting our rich maritime heritage while fostering a sense of unity and resilience within the community. I believe that outrigger canoeing and sailing are more than just water sports—they are a connection to our culture, history, and the natural environment that sustains us.

Volunteering in this space has taught me invaluable lessons about perseverance and unity. Whether it’s organizing practice sessions, maintaining the canoes, or simply cheering from the shore during competitions, every contribution, big or small, plays a vital role in keeping the sport alive and thriving.

By engaging with the association, I aim to support the development of skills, teamwork, and confidence among participants—especially the youth, who represent the future of this tradition. My hope is to see Levuka become a vibrant hub for outrigger and sailing activities, inspiring a new generation to embrace these practices as a source of pride, discipline, and community spirit.

Vinaka,
Mr. Roy Terence Fiu
